Make yourself a Surfmaster PI. You won't regret! If you hunt on the beach it is superb, also easy to DIY. I tried and it worked! Au, Al, Ag, Fe,...it detects all...but keep in mind that PI have NO discrimination. Again they are deep on the beach for example, but somewhere else...use a VLF, IB it saves a lot of time.
PI detectors are fast, deep, easy pinpoint, waste a lot of battery dig trash....but when you make any kind of device keep in mind:
1. You clean PCB after soldering from flux residue,
2. You clean the TIP of the solderig iron with wet sponge,
3. Use small tolerance components, resistors (1%) capacitors (5%)
4. Take your time winding the coil, count!, and always shield the thing leaving a small gap in coil. (people usualy screw up this at VLF,IB cos they place it at the wrong side!!!! No one here gave an opinion on the placement of the Al shield...but it is a major one! )
And the last advice I can give is BE PATIENT AND MEASURE EVERYTHING!
The truth is always in front of your nose!
