Has the design of the Gold bug 2 been consistant? I saw an ad for one indicating it was older and thus "better". That would seem backwards to me. (I am strictly discussing the GB2 - not newer Goldbug models released in the last year or two)

History of Goldbug 2?

The GB2 is the End/Top of the Analogue line of Gold Detectors. The GB(1) ran at 20Khz and was a little more sensitive to smaller gold than the Gold Stinger(Garrett) at 15.5Khz.
The Whites (???????) went to apx 30Khz to get the SMALLER YET, gold Nuggets.
Then Fisher came out with the GB2 at 70Khz which will find FLY Sh1t Sized pieces.
This has Been the end of the Race to Smaller size pieces as the Technonogy hit a barrier.
So they are using a DSP type MCU to make the Componet Count Smaller and Lower and Raise the Price on the units. This gives a Software Decision making process that allows for more Depth Determination and what's in the ground (Disc)/ (VDI) with the lower Parts count and upgrades being SoftWare instead of Hardware Related.
The only other VLF that goes higher is the Falcon MD20 at 300Khz and it willl find peices that are so small that it takes 10+ to make a peice of Fly Sh1t. But it's Confined to 1" detection limit, where as the others are good for 2" to 14" depending on the size of the peice and the Frequency and the Size of the Coil.
ie;
This is a set of Generalizations for VLF's
The Bigger the Coil the Deeper the Detection limit
The Smaller the Coil the Shallower the Detection limit
The Bigger the Coil the Bigger the Detectable Target
The Smaller the Coil the Smaller the Detectable Target
The Bigger the Target the Deeper the Detection Limit
The Smaller the Target the Shallower the Detection limit
the Lower the Frequency the Deeper the Detection limit
The Higher the Frequency the Shallower the Detection limit
The is for VLF machines only. The PI's are another Animal all togeather.
Hope this helps
Sincerely

Thanks but I shoudl have made myself clear - I wasn't discussing the Goldbug "1" either.
There are what are discussed as "Los Banos" models and then those made later. I Googled some more and found my own answer... Looks like there could be a difference between older and newer unit functionality as discussed in this forum: http://www.akmining.com/forums/showt...2165-Goldbug-2
Mustn't have been a big deal though as I've not heard complaints of newer units. I just wanted to have warm and fuzzies if I were to get an older one.

A lot of people have been making a fuss over Los Banos-built Fishers vs El Paso-built Fishers. While there certainly could be a difference in build quality (workmanship), I would not expect a difference in performance, assuming the design and calibration procedures did not change. To be honest, it wouldn't surprise me if this whole issue isn't due to wishful thinking, kinda like the folks who talk about the glory days of TR detectors.

Sorry I didn't catch that in your first post, sometimes I get longwinded and off track.
I am giving a talk at the rock and mineral club on choosing Metal Detectors for Coin and/or Nugget Hunting at the end of this month. Thats why I got off on the above posts diatrib. The Juices started to flow and I couldn't stop myself.
As far as the LB's GB2's vs EP's GB2's I have the same opion as Carl.
BUT I do know that the 6.5" elyp coils that were made in LBs ARE superiour to the ones made in EP. Jerry M. told me in 2007 that he had to return 12 out of 18 to the EP factory for replacement. I had to do the same on my EP unit I bought from him in Sept 2006, It was from the El Paso Factory. I think that was only because of the inexperienced labor that was hired locally. Only a few of the OLD workers from Los Banos moved to EP.
The coil didn't have depth nor sensitivity to Small pieces, and would false like it didn't have a Faraday shield or something like that. In green grass it was worse when you bumped stuff it would sound off like a small target.
You test for this problem by turning on the machine and setting to presets.
take your thumb and middle finger and squize the coil from the top and bottom.
If your coil has a problem the it will sound off like it has a ground balance problem. It won't sound like a target it'll sound softer.
I sent my unit and coil in to El Paso and got it back in less than 2 weeks Working Perfectly.
I don't think that this has been a problem for a couple or three years now as I haven't heard anything in the field or on the forums about it.
Lots of new folks to this Hobby Have SO Much to learn before they can make an informed decision as to What detector to buy for What their after. Thats WHY it's SO important to get the Training from a Knowledgeable Dealer. That Means one Who Uses the Machines they sell. Can that Dealer Consistantly Find, Repeatably, The Targets they sell macines for. Will they take the time to let you TAG along on their Hunts and Help you learn your machine. All the Great Dealers (Harry & Lucy Bowen++others) Took the time to make sure that you were Profecient in the use of your machine, but also in Your Target Recovery methods. Leave No Evedence YOU were there TH'ing/MD'ing.
Sincerly
