  • slightly off subject, need help, tow tec

have finally gotten back on to my tow tec boat towed metal detector project. Need some suggestions: built a 1in PVC housing for the coil now need a pourable liqud to pour in to the housing that will harden and is impervious to water.

    Charles,

    Try Polyester Resin.
In Europe you will find it in any hardware shop.
I expect that in USA it will be the same.
    There are 2 types
One for repairs and one for pouring.
    Tried both and both worked.

However... I recently experienced problems with a certain type of sensor.
After I poured the resin a pressure sensor stopped working.
The pressure sensing part of the sensor was not in the resin.
I tried it with 2 sensors and both stopped working.

Might have something to do with the temperature increase during the process.
When the resin reacts with the hardner the temperature gets quite high... steaming high as a matter of fact.(Overdid the hardner a bit...)
The temperature increase depends on the amount of hardner you put in.

These sensors are the only electronic parts sofar that seem to be affected, all other parts work OK after pouring Polyester resin on them.

    Hope this helps.

    Best regards, Jan

Jan, thanks for the input. Having worked with fiberglass doing small boat repair the polyester resin has been what I have planned on using.I have about 1 gal. of it here and hope to get to pour it today before heading out on a search/dive trip. The only thing the polyester fiberglass resin will incase in side the pvc pipe wil be the 15 turns of 18 gauge wire. My other idea was using polyurethane but it is hard to find in my area.
      thanks

        Charles,

Be aware that Polyester does not bond with PVC that well so water may get between PVC pipe and resin.
To make sure that no water enters between PVC pipe and Resin I use a 2 component glue to seal top and bottom of pipe.

After that the construction is watertight.

The wire will not be affected by the resin.

        Best regards, Jan

Jan, good morning. Had all ready used a PVC sement to put the housing together. had to pour the resin in the pvc in sections. I had put 4 T conectors in the housing one near each corner. This will be used to attach a skid. I stood the unit up on end to pour resin in to one end. Went back in about 30 min to check it, boy was that rascal hot. after fininshing that end I went to lay it flat to pour one of the long sides. Well that thing had gotten so hot it warped the pipe. the end I poued has about a one inch drop. Now to day I am going to see if I can match that drop on the other end to make it look the same. It sould have no effect on the coil considering the size. But the next coil I will fill it on flat surface. Had hoped to go out today and pull my Dalton magnetometer and Dan's type side scan sonar but hurricane Florence is causing some large waves and strong under towes. Guess today I will finish pouring risen and fabricate the housing/cable conection.
          thanks

used fiberglass risen in second coil measuring about 2ft by 6 ft. filled it by turing upside down lying flat poured the risen into the 8 T connectors. the 8 T connectors are where I am going to attach the 4 skids.
Today after thinking of all different optoins for skids I settled on a 55 gal plalstic drum. Cut out 4 6 inch wide skids using the bottom as the forward part of the skid it will have about a 4 inch turned up section. Off to Lowes to get some nylon bolts to attach the skids to the coil with.
