Traditionally, 100kHz has been used for longer ranges with less resolution and 500kHz has been used for shorter ranges and higher resolution. High-end systems may have both frequencies in the same towfish. Datasonics, now part of Benthos, claims that their chirp technique gives the resolution of high frequency systems with the range of low frequency systems. Theoretically, their approach makes sense, but I've never used one. In our home-grown system and soon-to-be professional system, 200kHz seems like a good compromise.
