  • Marine Sonic Cable Wanted

We have a 171' long cable and wish to obtain a replacement cable of 300'+. The cable is made of 3 sets of twin coax, plus connectors. Marine Sonic wants $1840 for 100M (330') of cable. Does anyone know of a good source for less expensive cable, have a used cable in good working condition or would be willing to work out a trade with the shorter cable?

I can see how much it would be to manufacture a kevlar reinforced replacement cable and to what economical cost. Me and Sture Hultqvist manufactured one to a lot cheaper cost than this. 450 Kg rupture limit. Can you provide me about the exact colourcoding and dimensions of the inside, and i will come back with exact price including shipping to where evere you are!
    Best regards Paul Hultsbo
And if there is anyone more interested in this the price will be much less per meter...

      Steve,

The coax cable inside our towcable is a custom made variant of RG174. There are two main drawbacks to using standard RG174. Firslty, it has a much steeper attenuation curve so it might not pass our higher frequency towfish when you use long lengths. Second, coaxial cable suffers from a problem called Z kinking. When the cable is bent over a sharp radius or if it is subject to a sudden jerk, the center conductor will short through the insulator to the sheild. These shorts must be found with a pulse generator and an oscilloscope and then be cut out and the cable spliced back together. Our cable is custom built to avoid the Z kink.

You CAN use RG174 cable, but be aware of these problems. They were enough of a problem for us to have our towcable custom made. I hope this helps you.

      Sincerely,
      Thom Wilcox

Thom, thanks for your reply. Is it practical to splice our existing 171' of cable? If so, what would 200' of cable cost?
