  • Imagenex SportScan Sonar quality?

    hello,

does anybody know something about the quality of the low-cost-sss of imagenex, especially the "sportscan"-model? a new system costs about $ 4000 and i'm very interested in it. but perhaps this sonar is not as good as it pretends to be?

    best regards
    christian

    Re: Imagenex SportScan Sonar quality?

I have an Imagenex Dual Frequency SportScan and I'm really happy with the results that I get.

It is limited to a 100' tow depth, however I have had it as deep as 200'. When in rough water it requires a little creativity to maintain a "smooth" scan.

Do you any pictures you could show us? I'd like to acquire a device to help find new dive sites in the Puget Sound area... I've tried the Humminbird 3D Paramount, but it's a really poor cousin to a SSS.

Talked to Carl Fredericks in Florida and he markets this unit. Becuase of tow cable lenght (120'? I think) it wasn't possible to get the fish very deep. How did you depress it to 200'? We're here in the San Francisco area and becuase of thermal clines it's necessary to get atleast close to 100' with our old Wesmar thermal unit. You opted for a longer tow cable? I thought that was really expensive? Appreciate the feedback as the unit looks great. Thanks Bob

          You're right about the cables.........

The stock cable is 75', I have both the 75' and 200'. The 200' is expensive, approx. $800. I added an aluminum sheetmetal wing to the sidescan to help maintain the depth.

Most of what we do is off the Oregon coast. We didget up to Canada just a few weeks ago and dove some of the artificial reefs there. I have attached a scan of one.

This past weekend we scanned a lake and did a practice dive with a home built ROV. I have also attached a scan from there. I has an old foundation approx. 17' x 30' x 3' high. It is in 72.

                thanks!

                hello,

thank you all very much for those informations. that is, what i like to hear :-)

i'm going to buy such a sidescan in january, i think it will be OK for scanning in the 30 meters shallow waters at the coastline of the baltic sea in northern germany.
until then i will get some more experience with my selfmade towfish with an eagle cuda 168 fishfinder for display.

                best regards

We are one of the largest dealers of the SportScan Sidescan unit. Yes the quality is realy very good. The 200 foot cables from us is only $795 Canadian dollars. A little over $500 US.
