Why are production side scans so expensive? I don't see were the cost to manufacture these $20,000 +/- units comes from.

It's mostly volume. If they could sell side scans like televisions, you could buy one at Circuit City for $500. But when you sell only 50 or so a year, the price goes up. Same with any other gadget. Sonar transducers for SS also tend to be expensive, probably for the same reason.

They are so exspensive because companies that build them need to mark them up in order to pay for the R and D, pay for Customer service and engineering staff to suport the product after sales, keep spares on the shelf for repairs...... do I need to go on?Comment
