data analysis algorithm for beginners?

Hi,

I would like to understand the algorithms used to extract informations out of a sonar signal.

Are there some papers for beginners available? I had a look at Amazon, but the books listed for sonar and signal analysis are much too expensive just for curiosity....

Maybe it's because the processing of the sonar data ain't to complex or advanced...

Where would the sonar industry be if everyone built their own sidescans?
