Is the mosaic software needed to find objects underwater or with the use of the GPS can you tell the location of the object on the screen with the basic software that comes with the unit? I was interested in the dual frequency Sportscan and trying to figure how much it was going to cost above the cost of the fish to get started. Thanks.

    Re: sport side scan sonar

The only thing you need beside the Sportscan is a 12V DC source, and a computer. An old laptop computer with win98 will du right fine. With an handheld GPS unit, you are also able to get the location with GPS coordinates, as you piont your mouse pointer on the objects.
The mosaic software is used to "mosaic" the scanned picture infor one big "map" of the seafloor. It can be easily described as if you took an paperprint of an echosounder, and kut it up into shorter strips and glued them side-by-side to get an wider picture of the bottom.
Look at http://www.chesapeaketech.com/sonarweb/SonarWebPro.html for a view on one mosaic software.

Glenn, Thanks for the rapid reply. I was not sure exactly what the mosaic software did. That clears it up for me.
