A while ago there was a company website that showed a scan of the Des Plaines Sanitary & Ship Canal where the pipes from the treatment plant discharged through the wall. The image showed the interior of the pipes for some depth, even showing that two of the valves were closed. From this one would suppose that caves in a vertical wall would be easily visible.
