How do you build a side scan sonar ?

I wanna get a side scan sonar, but they cost alot of money. Can I build one ? are they easy to build ? I wanna use it to find wrecks .
I'd like to scan about 100 yards on each side of the boat.
And what kind of monitor would I need ? do you need sonar software ?
