  • Does "on-start ground balancing" exist? (ace 250)

    Hi

I have had a discussion about the ACE 250 GB. I was about sure (and got confirmation by Garrett), that the GB on the 250 is fixed.

Someone pretends that when you turn it off and then back on, it will auto-adjust to the ground conditions.

And so be able to get (limited) wet sand huntig capacities, for instance.

I'm not an expert in these matters

What do you people thik about this?

    Thanks.

    J.

If the detector does not have a manual ground balance control, then the GB setting will be preset at the factory. This is usually set using a ferrite slug. For instance, in the Fisher 1266 service manual, it tells you to use a "ferrite wand", which is basically a wooden dowel with a ferrite slug embedded in the end. Of course, if the ground in your area does not match the factory setting, or the level of mineralization varies greatly, then a detector with a simple preset GB is not for you. However, a lot of Garrett detectors also include some form of ground tracking, which enables the detector to follow the effects of varying ground.

I don't think automatic ground tracking will help with hunting in wet sand, as the conditions will change too rapidly, but these detectors usually also include a beach setting, which moves the ground balance sample to a different position.

There is a schematic for the Ace250 floating around, and it shows the GB as being fixed. It is possible that a detector could have purely auto tracking with no provision for manual adjustment, but the Ace250 doesn't appear to have this.

Neither does it appear to have a saltwater mode for detecting on the beach.

This is confirmed by the user manual, where it advises the user to use lower sensitivity levels on saltwater beaches, as the detector can behave erratically.

The 250 is a great beach coin machine, the way to use it, is in jewellery mode
notch out the 5c and below and turn down the sens till it stops falseing,
usually two segments, I DO NOT PUT THE COIL IN THE WATER.
It seems to like a fast swing, try it.

            Hi guys,

            and thanks for the replies.

I am convinced now that "on start gb" does not exist. The GB on the ace is fixed, and does not auto-adapt to ground coditions when t's turned on.

About every vlf single frequency detector will work on wet salt sand providing that disc is increased and sens lowered. But that means less depth and much gold discriminated out.

            Thanks again !

            Jim'
