I have built the little circuit. It works perfect. And I have blown up a transistor with smoke and heat.


And I have found, that the cheap LED flashlights from ALDI and Norma do not have any regulators (connected directly to the battery with a simple switch). But one can mod them into a single cell flashlight.

The Joule Thief works with series and parallel LED's with no problem. I have tested the cheap LED flashlights with 21 and 25 parallel white LED's. The one before the transistor died worked very bright with two or three battery cells.

There are many many funny circuit modifications and variations available in the internet. That is a funny rainy week-end project.

The Joule Thief is really amazing.
I have managed to run it with a 2-EUR coin and a pencil sharpener made out of magnesium. Put a small paper towel on the 2-EUR coin (as seperator), put several drips of salt water and put the pencil sharpener onto the salt-water towel. The 2-EUR coin is the + connection and the pencil sharper is the - connection of the battery cell.

Funny stuff.
