  • Minelab GP series Battery Polyswitch ptc

Does anyone know the details of the polyswitch used in the 6v batteries for the Minelab GP series detectors?

They use a polyswitch in series with the battery as a slow (soft) start of the machine. I am making new supplies
and wanted to use their polyswitch idea.

    Thanks

They dont really do softstart - Id guess its more for safety.

If a detecter went faulty it may cause fire in battery - with a polyswitch you get Fuse - Like protection.

This means the battery doesnt die with the unit too. The magic bit is the polyswitch resets after the fault condition - so that battery survives and can be used on your repaired unit or other det.

This means they keep reputation and dont get care calls too. Cell phones have these inside for safety too.

You may try some surge protector instead, such as ICP-Nxx ones, see attachment. They are cheaper than fuses, and work even better than the fuses.

NTCs are usually used for starting heavy loads, but I guess you'd be happier with somewhat snappier action.

Thank you for your reply. I thought that made better sense.
