  • what's the best MEtal detecting technology for cutlery

    Hi there,
    I'm looking to buy/build a metal detector to detect cutlery that goes through the coil/s

    i know that cutlery/stainless steel is harder to detect.

    do somebody have a recommendation about what technology is best for that? (PI,VLF,BFO)

    I know of one project, in which some VLF arrangement was attempted to detect cutlery, before they would enter into the mill with waste food. It failed, but details of why are unknown to me, and the designer has passed away.
    Are you also trying to detect cutlery from inside of waste food, or what's the setup?

      You didn't specify the purpose. Is it counting the number of pieces, or determining what they are made of to sort silver from steel?

          Hi guru,
          its what janne wrote - i need just to detect if cutlery was thrown into the trash bin...so just to detect if some cutlery went through my coil which i guess need to surround the bin.

              I would lean toward a high frequency (50-100kHz) VLF for stainless. You will probably also be dealing with metal trash (screw caps etc) and VLF might give you a hope of some discrimination.

                  There was a detector that was never released that was real good at detecting spoons. And was also good at detecting beer cans and aluminum blocks. I think they ran into some problems, so it was never released.

                        I'm trying to find any 50-100Khz VLF detectors Kits or "real" detector to buy an hack, but all I find are lower frequencies , are you sure there are 50-100KHZ detectors?

                          Most of detectors can detect cutlery as forks, spoons, knives. This is not a big problem, even it is out of stainless steel.

                          Problem is how to detect small broken parts of cutlery, especially stainless steel pieces.

                          If you wish to protect food mill, you need to connect some sort of conveyor belt Start-Stop system to your detecting stage (best two detecting stage than one).

                            actually I'm not looking to detect small broken parts of cutlery , just normal cutlery that is accidently been thrown to a normal trash bin.


                            Do you think that any normal good detector should detect it?


                            even if my trash bin ( = coil) diameter is , lets say, 40 cm?

                              Normal unbroken cutlery can be detected (on pass through or pass along to the coil) very well using one VLF prospecting machine. I can easily detect stainless steel forks at distance of 30cm in air with mine Tesoro Diablo II (an old prospecting machine).

                              But if you need coil in circle shape of around 40cm of diameter (for pass through), you need to think about PI or BFO design (best non-motion one). And near environment of your bin (as well as bin itself) need to be metal free.

                              Maybe better, than think about 40cm coil, will be to made bin lid first with smaller bin mouth of say 20cm (look for idea at juicers) and you need coil of smaller diameter which would better suit to most detector designs.
