  • Are commercial MDs analog or digital?

    Hello,

Just wondering if anyone knew if high end detectors like the gpx5000 have analog circuits or are they run by a cpu in a mixed system?

Also, if someone was to make a PI detector using a microcontroller, would that infringe on any patents if the algorithms were original?

    Thanks

Most detectors are a combination of analog & digital. In general, a PI with a micro is not patentable; however, specific algorithmic implementations may be.

Some of those patents are pretty far reaching... Most detectors with a display have a micro in there somewhere.
The processor helps with target recognition and writing to the screen. I'm not sure there is any such thing as a purely
digital detector though Aziz is getting close! Many of the new designs get the signal into digital as soon as possible
as once you have the data fun stuff can be done with software.

The main problem is sampling. It costs a bit to do fast sampling and most detectors are designed to a price point.
There are some tricks you can do to get the data without the heavy horsepower chips.

Do you have an idea in mind?
