  • Garrett XL 500 Pulse battery pack?

    Hi,
I have a old Garrett XL500 pulse that the batterys are dead on but don't know how many batterys I need to use to operate the XL500.
It has 7 c size batterys but I cant tell if they are 1.2 or 1.5 volts?
Anyhow I wonder how many 1.5 volt batterys I can use and not burnup the board?

    Thanks for any help
    Paul

    Hi Paul,

The XL500 used 7 sub-c nicad cells. When fully charged would read about 9.8 volts (1.4v/cell).

You could use up to 8 x 1.5 volt cells or 12 volts. I wouldn't use any more. A quick and easy fix.

Go to Walmart and buy a 8.4 volt Airsoft paint ball gun battery. You find them in the sporting goods department.

Cut the connector off one wire at a time and splice them to the old battery wires.

    Hope this helps

Thanks The reason why I worried about the voltage is they are 7 sub c batterys and why not 8?
The picture shows instead of using the 8th battery it is a wood dowel.
Thanks PaulClick image for larger version

Not sure if they used 7 cells vs 8 to save a few dollars. Eric Foster designed that circuit, he probably specified about 9 volts.
That is what his earlier underwater designs used- Whites PI1000, Aqua Sport and Aqua Pulse. The wooden dowel was used for mechanical
reasons as filler so that it would fit snuggly into the stainless steel holder.

The circuit will run on 8 cells without problem.

          Thanks Altra,
I wanted to ask someone who knows before I connect 8 batterys.

I've replaced them with a ready made battery pack of 8 and it worked just fine.
