Has anyone tried powering their detector directly with solar panel?

A solar array to power most detectors would have to be big = heavy, and having to face the sun while detecting would be a problem. Using one in camp to charge a batt. while you're out detecting would work but I would just bring extra batt. packs.

I made 12"x12" 200-400 mA to charge my Whites 12V packs it works good so far.

"Polymorphic" - flexible pannel on the coil housing. I saw them in china nice and slim.
