  • Sure you need to assemble that cirquit and play with it. I got some problems with it before so I can give some advices:

TDA2822 has a very high gain 40 dB or it is equal of voltage gain x 100.
So in most cases you will need to set a divider to prevent your strong signal from metal detector to overload that amplifier.
In my cirquits usually I am shorting inputs with 100 or 200 Ohm resistors to ground and adding 10k pots as volume regulators before resistors to divide input voltage for x 100 times or less.

Also that 100 Ohm resistors providing low input impedance. With high input impedance I can hear local radio stations plays music in speakers because with high impedance that amplifier picking up and amplifying all EMI and noises.

Regarding separating power supply. If you using one power supply for metal detector and audio power amplifier you may see some problems.
Spikes of current in speakers will drop voltage in metal detector power supply destabilizing its work. So you can hear even "motorboating" or oscillation in speakers as well as current in metal detector power supply starts jumping.
That is why I am using separation of power when metal detector and power audio amplifier have individual tank capacitors and voltage regulators
(or 20 Ohm resistor filtering current spikes before tank capacitors in power amplifier instead of voltage regulator).

Original Surf PI has that influence of speaker current to metal detector power supply voltage so with loudspeaker you can see some instability like "motorboating" or oscillations.
Once I have added TDA2822 and make it powered separately using additional 78L05 I have noticed of very much more stable and quiet operation of my Surf PI.

Also before connect it to 14v please be sure that TDA2822 works with 12v max and TDA2822M works from 15v max.

    • @NickHolas:
Hi allthanks f117 your right i ve made wrong connection between coil shield and coil but now i ve got a continuous beep playing with lm318 pot ( pin 3 at 8v) and sens pot (minimum) nothing works, only when i put less than 7 to 6 v to pin 3 of lm318 the beep stop, don t know what to do else
The 8V adjustment works for a 'standard' coil of around 300 microHenry.
With sensitivity at minimum ( 0 V at the pot wiper ), you should be able to get a steady ticking sound instead of instability (continuous tone). If you have an oscilloscope, you should see the top part of the flyback ( voltage returning to 12V ) at the opamp output and attenuated by a resistor divider at the microcontroller input.

Have a look at post #61 in this thread. There I listed all DC values you should measure.

      • Hi f117
Thanks for your interest, i m not at home (holiday kids!) I wilI test it surely friday.
        Thanks again

        • Final year project

          hello f117,
I would like to know where to get the flat spiral coil? Do you have any web link that selling this coil? Is the PICKINI able to detect non-ferrous and non-metallic material? Are you selling this PICKINI v2?
Sorry for asking so much question because i am currently doing final year project which i planned to use your detecting system. I need detail information about this project. I hope you can assist me.
          Thank you in advance.

For a flat spiral coil: you can wind it yourself or contact Gary at Chemelec:
            http://www3.telus.net/chemelec/Projects/Metal/Coil-Jig/Coil-Jig.htm

Like any other PI detector, the Pickini is very sensitive to ferrous metal - "non-metallic" material (plastic?... ) is obviousliy not detected.

I am not selling complete boards or programmed chips. Please contact your local electronics shop for the PCB - you can find the layout on this thread - and for programming the PIC controller - you can also find the hex file on this thread.

            All the best,
            -Bernard

            • Hi F117,

this is really a nice project and I wish I would have noticed it earlier. Also you did a great job organizing the project on your website. Seems like everything is well documented too . I'll definitely will try to build one sooner or later... I have one question though, are you aware of any longboard PCB designs of your pickini? I like the idea of putting everything in pvc pipe as done with Silverdogs surf pi.

Thank you for pointing me to this topic on our Belgian forum http://www.detectorvrienden-vlaanderen.be

              • Hi all
I put 2 fresh 9v cells (+- 18v)to test my pickini , when i switch on, i only have 6v so the 12v regulator can t do this.
I have the 3 tones with only 1,6v at the power pin of the pic!
Could someone know where is the problem ?

                • Thank you for the link.

So you bought the flat spiral coil from him? May i know how much for the flat coil cost in this project?

Did you upgrade the PIC16F1824 to another version of PIC18 or other type of micro-c?

                  Thanks in advance

No, I wound the spiral coil myself. See the first posts in this topic for pictures.
But the easiest coil to wind is a bundle coil: diameter 20 cm and 27 turns will give good results.
Far easier than a spiral coil and also easier to shield. And yes, you need shielding on your coil or you will get false signals whenever you touch ground, weed or grass.

Seems like you have a large current drain on the board somewhere.
How much do you have without the coil ?

                        Hi Kasper,
I am currently redesigning the board and front end to:
                        - have a smaller form factor long board - with an 8 pin PIC instead of a 16 pin
                        - have a simpler power supply - without the 12V stabilizer.

                        Best regards,
                        - Bernard

                        • Hi F117,

What's the function of TP1-7 located in the schematic diagram?

                          Thank you in advance

                          Comment

                          • TP1 : not used
TP4 : digital output = detection -- for LED or buzzer connection
TP5: flyback output after passing through the internal comparator -> digital pulse varying in width when target is detected
TP7: pushbutton to ground = reduce sensitivity to minimum - initially intended for pinpointing ( but switching from motion to non-motion with identical sensitivity would be better)

                            • What about TP 2, 3, 6? I would like to connect all the electronic components in the breadboard first and i need to know whether i have to connect every TP as stated in the schematic or just leave it ?

may i know the Potmeter+switch specification?
                              4k7 = 47k?
                              10E = ?

                              Sorry for the trouble.thank you
