Well at long last the sun is out and I have finished the rebuild. All of my 'mods' removed except one - 40M across AUTO switch. Now, I know why that makes it all work, what I don't see is how the original ever did ? My only guess is the the 470n is perhaps electro and thus a bit leaky ? Anyway, mine works. Threw out the multi turn bal pot for a single turn which I find much easier to use. First simple tests after GB and on coins on the ground ie not buried, shows 9" plus.
A few pics, pleased with batt box I cut into the top. Bought and old detector on Ebay for £5.00 to get the pole anda the speaker grill. Had problems with coil connector so ended up with 4 pole XLR. Total weight is just 1.2 Kg. Layout and parts matter! Use cheap caps to decouple. I used monolithic ceramic everywhere else.

Nice job! the face plate when you look at it straight on is reminisent the colt dx moble rigs, i like those rigs lots of mods.
I had a colt 1600 dx that was maxed out in fact the only mod left, was a mod that separated the 20 channels from the mid band and high band and renumbered them 1-40 ie uk cb band(fm), but i ran out of front panel access to add the mod.
so left it i knew 33 midband was 19 uk anyway, the day i let that rig go i regretted it and ever since.
Thanks for the flash back i prefer the plain black front, black nobs with silver script is just my style!.
