Learning from patents

Does anyone recomend any particular patents for IB machines that I can glean good useful information from to help me further my understanding of detector circuits ?
Preferably patents that have a circuit on and an explanation of features.

I'd like to compare different manufacturers solutions to GEB , Discrimination & ID , and battery to performance. Maybe even different designers for the same company design totally different machines.

Hi Peter,

I personally prefer to read and analyze George Payne's patents. They do give more information than most as far as specific details. Look for the early White's patents and the Teknetics patents. Actually, you will find some similarities in Dick Hirschi's also since he and Geoge worked together at Teknetics.

Dave Johnson's patents are good also but the schematics or more generalized. These will be the Fisher patents.

George Payne has indicated he wants to write a book on how metal detectors work. Hopefully this will be done in the future.

It is possible that Dave Johnson might want to do the same.

Both are more than qualified to provide the information to better understand how detectors work.

Personally, if both wrote a book, I would buy both.

Many patents seem to be written to meet the legal obligations of disclosure while at the same time trying to prevent you from understanding what they are really doing.

For the basics I would recommend George Payne's patents. They are a little old but they are readable. Once you have a good grasp of the basic principles it should be easier to read some of the newer patents. Though sometimes I still cannot figure out what they are talking about.
