Not exactly in the midle, but for bigger coils are cable connections (somewhere) in the middle of coil pretty usual.

Yes! The newest 10 X 12" DD from Tesoro has the cable exiting almost exactly from the center..

I recently got some shells and there is no provided area for the cable exit. User has to pick the phase sensitive central area to locate floppy cable!


With Georgi 27cm DD that had hole for strain releif bush off centre.
