A few homeworker-tools are almost perfect for this task - the complete detector is very small:
The PCB is 7,5cm x 4,5cm, also the ferrite antenna.
It works with just 3V (2 x AAA 1.5V batteries) or a 3.7v LiPo accu can be used.
The beeper could be replaces with something, also a larger coil should work.
Pressing the button switches the detector to on and to reset state.
This means that you can press the button while the coil is near a metal object and
it will be just less sensitive but still in quiet-modus until you get even closer and
that way a larger coil also would be adjusted automatically if it's in the technical limit.
As long as the button is pressed the detector is working.
It is pretty sensitive for very small stuff and it also detects 220V lines.
