The loop on the left, marked L1 / L2, is a center-tapped coil. The line you can see in the picture is the wire going to the center tap.

I think you got it wrong way. Your first priority is defining what purpose you need a device for, and what kind of terrain you have. Most probably your terrain is going to be less cooperative than inland Europe mineral-less easy grounds, so you'll need something with ground balance on it. Also you need to define what kind of targets you are after. Once you know what the input variables are, you'll know what detector is best for you, and then you'll be able to scale down. So IMHO you are better off searching from top to bottom.
In case you start from bottom, you'll have lots of fun building many devices that will eventually lead you to something that really works.

Go for a 2box. Because Tx is way off the ground it will not make problems in mineral rich soil, and it will give you that deep detection.
