Can you tell me what kind of charger you use for your MD? it would be great if you have a schematics too.

I am using cheap chargers from eBay. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=18650+charger You can buy one starting $2.45 free shipping.
Quality not always great but from 5 chargers I have selected 3 working good. You can always check result with testers to be sure that charger cut of charge at 4.2 volts. (Some of them did not)

            Cable Gland Waterproof

Do not forget to buy Cable Gland on eBay. For example http://www.ebay.com/itm/130750191474
            20pcs PG7 PG07 Waterproof Connector Gland Dia. 3.5-6mm Cable

It will help you to waterproof your coil and headphone cables where they go to box.
Buy as smaller size as possible that fits your cable diameter to get better waterproofing.
It is cheap, easy to install, easy to insert and remove cables when repair is needed.
Also seller shipped it from China less then in one week. That is surprising.

                    Hello Waikiki_Sweep
Which brings me to an idea: Could I not use the water proof Cable Gland for potentiometer? (Pot with long shaft) At least to the circuit to protect against splashes.
                    Dirk

Surely I can do that in a device-a plastic bag even in stormy weather ....

That is interesting idea. Probably it may works. You just need to buy smaller of Cable Gland and use some lubricant like silicone lubricant for O-rings. I am using corn oil to lubricate O-ring in my waterproof camera case detector. It works well for few years already but with time corn oil hardening and I have to clean it out.
Do not use mineral oil based lubricants because it will destroy rubber ring inside Cable Gland.

I have used more expensive solution in my detector: HEXSEAL from Digikey. It is nut with silicone sealing you can put on regular potentiometer.

This is a good thread for underwater detector. What about type of cable and epoxy for coil. (pvc coated litz wire with alu shield)

Could you use magnets? one on the inside of the case on the shaft of the pot and one on the outside under some kind of knob.
