I've designed circuits with analog and logic chips not micros. Think I might like to try. The least expensive way to start I've seen seems to be a DM330013-2 from Microchip. Are there better options to start?

Green, The Uno32 is a better choice. Some of the guys here are using It, and cost only $26 with more features than the Microchip http://www.digilentinc.com/Products/...=CHIPKIT-UNO32
