  • noob question

Hi all, I have purchased a silverdog surf 1.2 kit. I am halfway through soldering components but have realised I have 4 1nf capacitors and 4 100nf where I should have 5 100nf capacitor. I do have one extra though it doesn't have printed on it what the others do though, it's red but has stamped on the top u1K63. Is this a 100nf? Or have I been given it by accident?

    Anyone?

      I am 90% sure that a u1k63 are 100n 63v 10% WIMA hopefully some else can confirm

        Agree.

Bainsey, what sort of instruments do you have?

Even with simple multimeter you can still check value of your Cx.

You need to load your Cx with battery or power supply (in your case you can use battery from say 9v till 50V).

Capacitor with different capacitance have different decay to zero from fully charged.

This different time constant we can use for simple check of capacitors value.

As comparison ethalon we need some capacitors with known value (you can use known capacitors of 0.1uF, 0.01uF and say 0.47uF or so).

I am using for test 9V battery (look at picture), and capacitors of 0.1uF, 0.01uF and0.47uF.

Measured time constant at my simple DMM was:

        for 0.01uF (10nF) - about 2 seconds

        for 0.1uF (100nF) - about 4 seconds and

        for 0.47uF (470nF) - about 6 seconds

More precise you measure time of testing ethalons, more precise results you get in your C measurement:
