  • Is this a legitimate way of doing a depth test.

    All

First I want to make it perfectly clear that I am NOT knocking the product being sold.

Recently I came across this video that demonstrates some coin depth tests on a wet beach,
it appears they have buried a piece of PVC pipe in the wet sand and are putting their target coin
in a plastic container and dropping it down the PVC pipe, and do the test.

So what do you all think about this type of testing using PVC pipe?,
Is this a legitimate or acceptable way of doing a fair depth test.

I guess its better than a AIR test.

What concerns me is the coin is not in contact with the wet sand, and there is an air gap down the tube,
normally when I do a depth test I bury the coin.
I live a long way from the beach to test this PVC method.

You can test it in soil also.

You are right regarding "not in contact" but results are pretty the same as with full contact, so such tests are acceptable (as comparison test also, if all MD are tested at the same time, due changeable humidity in sand/soil).

If the pipe is vertical then the target has only air above it. It's better to set the pipe on a 45° angle.
