  • Got the MD bug and researching the various types.

    Hi all. Newbie to the forum and I've been doing a lot of reading here.
    Last week while doing work in my yard my wedding band (24K gold) slid off my finger and into a big pile of leaves. Well for the next couple of days my family and I searched around for it with negative results. Just as we were all about to give up on it I decided to build a MD and continue the search. Searching through lots of DIY articles I found the "Matchless" IB locator and decided to give that one a shot (after a BFO didn't cut it). I live in northern Thailand and the limited electronic shops here don't stock the 7556 CMOS dual timer so some mods had to be made to the circuit. I wound up using 2 555's instead, used 2, 9v batteries in series into a 7812 regulator, and some other little mods. It all came together and when I went out to try it, I located my ring within about 10 minutes. Big relief finding it and now I have the bug to experiment with other types of detectors. I'm retired now with an electronics/RF background so I'm not afraid to jump in. I'm really interested in the PI's and think that's were I'm heading for my next build (if the needed parts can be had around here). This looks like a great forum to get answers, schematics, helpful tips, etc.

    Dan

      Welcome aboard! There are some kits available from England if you can receive them OK in your country;
      http://www.silverdog.co.uk/shop/inde...tegory&path=36

      A PI is a bit easier to make and can go deeper but doesn't discriminate as easily. Jump in and have fun!

        you should have no problem getting kits from silverdog,i send radio parts to an ex pat in thailand occasionally, they may take a while, but they will get there, and since you are a new member, wellcome to geotech.

            DanZ, that's a nice little metal detector for a "first timer", congratulations! And welcome to the forum.

              Thanks Dave! It's not the prettiest to look at but it did what I wanted it to do so I'm happy with it.

              I got my eye on the "Blind Squirrel" PI as my next project. I'm doing up a parts list and going downtown today to see what's available. Got a feeling a little improvising is going to be needed with this one too. The added challenge kind of adds to the fun though.

              Cheers,
              Dan
