Sure EMI is a reason for chatters in most cases, but it is good to be sure that chatter is not because of:

Broken coil cable, connectors, bad connections in coil, bad contact to shield inside coil, water in coil, ...
Bad contacts in battery pack, ...

Easy to check if go to another area where it works OK.

EMI can be very variable. Certain times of the day, or certain days of the week, it can be lower, for example if it is caused by industrial activity. Weather can sometimes play a part, and there may be a seasonal relationship, too.
Another possible coil arrangement that should give some EMI tolerance is a DD with a large transmit coil, and a small receive coil.

Don't know if this is any help to you rubydarlene but I have a Whites Beach Hunter ID which also can be used on inland sites. It has manual Ground Balance. Working in the all metal mode, targets are identified by three different coloured lights which flash individually or in combination so they are pretty good at very quickly showing the likely metal make up of the target. The only drawback is that one has to be constantly looking at the three lights every time the detector sounds on a target which I guess is your problem with your present detector. If there was tonal ID incorporated into the all metal circuit as well, then this would probably be my all round favourite detector. I have often considered whether it would be possible to change the circuit in some way so that when the red ferrous indicating light came on the audio signal was simultaneously cut out.

That is some very interesting information muddy. It's hard to believe no one has made a machine like that.

With a schematic you could do just about anything. You can use the LED drive to make 3 tones
with a little extra circuitry. A transistor or FET to open or ground the output could be driven off those
            LED's too.

Thanks for that Silver Dollar, I will experiment to see what can be done. The lights system is very good for ID'ing a signal, as even if the red light just flashes once momentarily after several passes with the coil, the object invariably contains some iron. The audio signal can go deeper than the light ID can work but this is in common with the usual meter system on various detectors.

I agree with a earlier post on here The way typical MDs stand at the moment multi frequency sounds are a waist of time in real use, after a short time give headache together with confusion .
3 tone is ok otherwise 2 or single tone.
Among my collection of detectors is a Mine lab Quattro which is multi frequency in use typical English ground has so many different annoying pops and out of tune jazz sounds its hard work.
If it had a adjustment for 3 tone it would be a brilliant bit of kit.
For enjoyment of endless hours detecting my Whites Prizm set to 3 or single tone is my favourite and although not so deep as some have found the best of my finds with.
coincidence but thats the one in my picture taken a few years ago even my daugher was able to swing it.
                Regards

Carl, to they make such a machine or do you know?

                      I'll check into that Skippy.
I'm looking for a motion all metal mode that gives different tones. Not just one tone.

I take it the F75's delta-pitch disc mode is not what you were after?

That's what XP's Deus, GoldMaxxPower & GMAXX2 do, Mark. Iron-tone and a choice of 2 or 3 non-ferrous tones on the GMP/GMAXX2, and no doubt all sorts of options on the Deus (maybe 4 tones, individually adjustable break-points).

How is this different from simply taking Disc mode and turning off the disc? That is, V3 lets you set tones any way you want, and lets you open up the disc to accept everything, effectively giving you a motion all-metal with tone ID. Other machines can do this too, but with more limited tone assignments.

True motion all metal mode does not filter like the discrimination mode. On the units I've use the machine is not as affected by EMI, which is one reason I opt for this mode. And in most cases the all metal mode is deeper, just because of the reduced EMI issues.

some kit has squeeler mode - where the tone is low for iron to very hi for silver - or vice versa
