Personally I would not want music to mask the detector's sounds.

May be you just need to try.

I can tell that music helps to find more targets instead if properly mixed with detector signal.
Sure detector signal have to be adjusted to be few times louder than background music.

Usually you can not crank up sound on your metal detector because sudden peaks of sound make it painful to hear.
While I have a music in the background I can run detector sound much more loudly and be in comfort zone because
music filling gaps between sound spikes and keep hearing adopted to required level of sound.
So you have several decibels of additional amplification and can hear more signals in the threshold hum. And sure get more targets.
Your brain is just smart enough to get all signals you want and separate it from music.

Target signal is sharper and can be easy recognizable over ground noises and music not masking it.
You can talk with friends in car when CD plays (with proper volume), you can hear anything and music just masking road noise.
In cinema you can hear intense music at time of shooting, chasing, explosions. It is required to make that loud sounds tolerable.

Also it helps to tolerate all that painful noises you have to hear while detecting. Without music it just cutting ears.

Also it will keep your energy high. Go to any gim and turn music off you will see customers walking away.

Also without music you will hear all that buzz from drank idiots and hillbillies targeting you on the street once they see your metal detector.

When I got my music I can stay in water detecting 8-9 hours.
If music is off I got bored by digging rubbish or irritated by hillbillies comments in 3-4 hours and go home.

waikiki gave me the secret ages ago, for land use its real easy all you need is an adapter, 2x headphone female to single male, the type that allows two sets of phones on one device and a stereo to stereo patch lead.
all i do is plug this adapter into mp3, plug patch lead(one end) and phones into this adapter, other end of patch lead into detector, set volume on detector slightly higher and bingo music while detecting.
though i only tried it as a proof of concept, as i'm losing my hearing(deaf in left already), and headphones are bad for me, but for others enjoy.
got some clever non audio indicators on the backburner maybe i should finish them.

It probably is possible to design a simple circuit to detect when the ctx output differs from the background tone and then take audio priority.
Could even do it with the WM-10 setup.
