they will provide 3v at ma each 100 - 300 in sunlight as much as 400 from some small 3vcells
{dont worry about the burden of looking less cool you already look like a prat with a metal detector how much more excuse to you need}
i also see a rather large panel that can charge a 12V cell car battery fully in 1 day
for us money about 120$ here is 80£sterling ?? i think its about that ball park
in just normal light

you can use switching diodes 1n5403 and a zener same volts as the supply needed in a T branch to switch over when volts is low

avoid using too much pi power so some sort of auto power adjust is needed

the best way is to leave it in a cupboard and go dig lots of holes instead.......
