it dissapeared on reboot, the os image is a special version of xp embedded, browser is firefox 2.5 modified to think its 3.0(to stop it trying to update all the time).
machine is a ibm t60 laptop, with an ibm solid state drive(10 gigs), it has a 100mb boot partition that windows is blind to, and a readonly win xp image(3 gig), the laptop has 8 gigs of ram, when you boot up, the boot sector reads the rom image, loads it in ram, then boots windows xp in ram, the remaining memory runs the os.
its difficult to set up but rock solid after its done, and lightning fast as the virtual memory is running in ram, as is every thing really, its great as a bench machine, if anything gets in no matter how bad its gone on reboot.

You can also build a RAM-only system using DSL (Damn Small Linux) -> http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/
It can boot from a USB pen drive, and even run on a 486DX with 16MB of ram!

That sounds just like the kind of installation you'd find in a nuclear power station or military installation. Where did you learn to do stuff like that ?

An upto date Browser is a safe one, might be time to update your embedded system. Or better still if your only use this computer for surfing the net, why not upgrade to Linux and maybe give Porteus a try. To test it you can burn the Porteus iso to cd and use it as a live distro.

Porteus is another great OS, they also have an option of building your own, with options for different desktop environments, different browsers etc.

thanks mick, i have a pc OS live distro disc that i'm fond of its the 2010 version not keen on 2011 onwards, dont know why it just seems as though its not as user friendly.
i have kept up with linux as its evolved, but getting old radio and test software running on it is hard, one scanner program i have runs on an old compaq laptop(win 95), that wont run on newer windows never mind linux, but like george said if i stick a live linux disk in it it is perfectly usable as a machine even on the net.

All these linux distros have very attractive UI. Looking around, there seem to be so many to choose from. How much would a novice need to learn, in order to keep one up-to-date and running healthily ?

Just found this article on Porteus. Starting to understand where it gets its name from. (Duh..)

I think porteus would be the way to go, just running as a live cd. The picture at the bottom of the post in of Porteus running on my laptop.

Linux MInt 17 or Ubuntu 14 both offer LTS (long term support) for updates until 2019, via an update manager. Ideal for a beginner/novice.

Pic of Porteus. 64bit Mate, with Firefox and Libre office installed. Running on live cd.

Easy, just scroll to the very bottom of this page and on the left hand side you'll see a box with a drop down arrow.

it will have -- Geotech Default Style in it, change it to -- vB4 Default Style
