ok im clear on what type to use for coils but the problem is i let it sit unmixed for a year or so and the black part hardened.can i use MEK to soften it and just use it or is it garbage. its two part medium casting resin just wondering if anybody ever tried it or knows a good way to save it.

Throw it out if all fails. The epoxy more than likely was cross contaminated with hardner. Or was stored in an area that was too cold for a long time.

You can try and use it to see if mixed with hardner will cure it. If it's not hard just thick, you can use a heat gun to a semi liquid state. Only thing as it cools it will rethicken. If the resin smokes, the heat gun is too close and too hot, dangerous situation.

You can also place the closed container of resin into some water and get it boiling to soften it.

Is it casting resin, or epoxy? Acetone works for Epoxy. if it is casting resin toss it. Casting resin you add a couple of drops of catalyst and epoxy is mixed equal parts A+B.

Yup the hot boiling water should liquidify the resin again. Stir well after its thin.
Here's a good read for you:

Casting resin can come in 2 part epoxy form and polyester resin with MEK as a hardener catalyst.
          Two types of MEK
MEK peroxide for use as a catalyst
MEK (2-Butanone) found at hardware stores as a solvent, cleaner.
Styrene is the proper solvent for thinning polyester resins.

For thinning epoxy, I always liked heating the mixed resin up a bit, it will thin to water consistancy. Easily soaks into porus parts and as it cools thickens to original consistancy.
A heat gun on low also helps flatten epoxy sags before curing takes place to get a smooth level finish. Lots of little tricks learned from building wooden boats years ago.
Acetone works to thin, if you don't mind changing the cured characteristics. Some folks use alcohol to thin epoxy for model crafts, which can make some epoxy resins when cured rubbery.
