Hi.
A very preliminary exploring post, to gather opinions of experienced in electronics, to evaluate if building an odd contraption is worth the try.
A 3m /10ft long PVC pipe (or longer) of the convenient diameter. Perhaps 10cm/4".
Inside and along its whole lenght, a plastic or wood strip where circuits and coils will be mounted. This is for removal/inspection ease, can be pulled out and reinserted. The pipe provides a tough protection as it will be carelessly dragged transversally over soil, not rolled.
Say ten transmitting flattened rectangular coils lined one after the other on the strip, About 4" x 12" each.
sort of
A[|=====| |=====| |=====| |=====| |=====| |======| ... |=====|]B
All being driven simoultaneously in parallel o series -or individually-.
Ends A and B caps attached to ropes, say end A supplies transmission cabling from the 'dragger' also. Say B supplies also a cable from the 'dragger' with DC power for receivers and signalling.
Ten more coils for sensing concentric to each for reception. Ten reception/detector circuits with them. Nothing too fancy. Finding shallow bottle caps items is fine.
Ten LEDs for the sensors. A beep speaker by the towing/person/vehicle when any of the LEDs flashes.
The point is to cover a very wide path. When a beep is heard, stop and check which led is latched on. That tells which coil sensed something. Dig or drag a powerful magnet to pick item and reset the LEDs to off manually with a pushbutton by say end B.
Many details to take care of, but, chances it may work ?
Yes, dragging a loooong powerful magnet would work too. But stay with the contraption.
