While doing some backups, and re-arranging data on my computer(s); I rediscovered an old but very useful calculator program that I wrote some time ago using Visual Basic. The formulas in the program were obtained from the following book:
High-Speed Digital Design (A Handbook of Black Magic) by Howard Johnson and Martin Graham.
It allows you to calculate various parameters for microstrip, stripline, coaxial cable, wire-wrap, and twisted pair. Its main purpose was for determining the characteristics of PCB tracks, and connecting cables, used in high-speed digital design.
The two screens of particular interest for metal detector design are the ones for the coaxial cable and twisted pair. For example, for the coaxial cable, you need to enter the diameter of the inner wire, the diameter of the outer wire, length of cable, and relative electric permittivity of the dielectric. The calculated results are the characteristic impedance, propagation delay, total inductance, inductance per inch, total capacitance, and capacitance per inch.
All the physical measurements are in inches.
I've tested it on Windows XP and Windows 7.
But it croaks on Linux with Wine.
And ... it's free of any viruses.
