  • Safety Feature?

    Hello
Im new to the forum and would like to ask a serious question.

I have a problem with the lower shaft on my metal detector. Just above where the lower stem connects to the coil, about an inch up from the securing bolt, there is a joint where the carbon shaft slips into the connection housing ( sorry I don't know what it's called). This joint keeps failing in my opinion and allows the coil to twist slightly left and right. Infact if I put the coil flat on the floor and hold my detector as normal I can twist it left and right, I can see the joint moving but not the coil. I have tried two different stems but they both have movement after using in the field for less than an hour.
i have been onto the seller and been told a couple of different reasons for this problem, the last reason they give me was, "it is a built in safety feature to protect the coil lugs and bolt incase I bang it real hard?"
Has anybody ever heard of a crazy feature like this on any machine?
I find it very distracting when detecting and always have to twist my coil back straight during a session! I have a picture but can't attach it, probably because I'm new. I would be interested in hearing your thoughts
    regards

Probably you are missing rubber rings between coil ears and lower shaft.

rubbers are on. Sorry I tried to copy and paste the image but it hasn't worked.
It is the joint which is twisting, which is about an inch above the coil connection

what detector you tell about? minelab?
"it is a built in safety feature to protect the coil lugs and bolt incase I bang it real hard?" - absoliutely uncompetent staff you did meet.

              Thanks for the reply kt315
i won't name the manufacturer but totally agree with your comments, I don't like the way I have been treated, excuse after excuse.
anybody experienced or heard of this excuse/problem before?
              regards

I would use superglue or stick a few times with the hot soldering-iron-tip carefully into it and it should no longer move.

Thank you fun FunFinder for the info, it sounds like it is not a safety feature and as the detector is not two months old, I will send it back.
                  regards

                    .
Better to tip into it fine brass net/mesh armature before and then cover with black colored epoxy glue.
Will not be broken ever again.

I would side with kt316. Sounds like a salesman trying to fob you off. I bet if you were in contact with the manufacturer, whoever they are, you would never get such a response.

You can take it as some safety if the left-right movement angle is just 1 or 2°.
Even those usually used metallic snappers (used to make the shaft longer or shorter) don't give a 100% movement stability.

Foggy, sometimes its better to fix little problems on your own than wasting time, creating huge trouble or waiting weeks until
an easy selfrepairable thing gets sended back.

Someone shouldn't directly throw away the car or cry for the service just because the ashtray is full!

Some wrap of brass-mesh at that location may be not so good because the coil could detect it.
But a similar method would be using a metal-brush to roughen the plastic surface at those location,
applicate some plastic-glue and wrap / glue some short and slightly thicker plastic-pipe over it.

Or: someone can drill a hole where the both parts connects and insert some piece of wood or plastic there.
This also works if the usual metal-clip that holds the upper and lower stem together has gone lost.

I understand what your saying FunFinder but I don't believe in paying good money for something I have to start repairing! If it was cheap or secondhand I would repair but not for new. Thanks for your help

Fully understand the justice motivation behind
but on the other hand in such a case persons pay anyway! - and:
Life's alot harder for persons who have a very low tolerance threshold in this world.
Because this world is full of sh*t or stuff and persons who don't work as they should!

Metal detectors are working-tools and if we compare them with broken excavators of
gold-diggers in Alaska sometimes it's much more practicable if they repair them
by their self if they can than having huge expeditions, work and time loss.

Even if they have costed 100.000 of bucks and still have free repair-service.
This is a question of flexibility and take life in own hands, even if others
have been the fault and made stupid mistakes.

People always wanna look good infront of others so its no wonder
those dealer told you everything is fine and its some safety-feature.
Sorry my friend but such stuff is peanuts and not even worth the hassle.

And the problem is that if they know you as someone that gets already very
upset and "correct" at such little things they might not treat you as customer Nr.1
if something real important happens with your MD.

Such a lose plastic connection is like if the train was 5min late.
For me what you are doing is pedantic and not even worth my time here.
Cynically said I would go to a lawyer if I were you and sue those dealer
for betraying you in saying its a security feature!
I'm shure the whole court will have fun!

If your intervention helps for improving things long term seen, fine,
also if you finally get a 100% working product - and if you're satisfied then, great.
However this was my point of view and believe me, seeing things more "flexible"
will do a lot favour in life, because whole living is full of chaos and inperfection.

And everyday spent being angry or troubled because of the crap of others, is a lost day!
