  • Detector Projects - Which compares to current Retail tech?

    Hey all,

Complete newbie here, to the forums and to the DIY detector scene.

Doing some research on DIY PI detectors and am wondering of all the projects and things listed on the forums, What compares to current Retail detectors.

EG. My dad has a Minelab GP Extreme, has never really been happy with how it runs, so looking to upgrade. Is there a project on here comparable to the GP extreme? Or higher up the minelab scale?

Looking at making something for gold detecting, not really into coin detecting.

Any info would be a great help to start me off.

    Thanks heaps!

    hello neo

for a good gold detector you should search for Projects with a dual amp stage and / or for Projects with microcontrollers which can work very fast

you can start from simplest projects like Baracuda and Surf PI. do something you are able to speedy __release__
then learn the theory of Pulse Induction in great book ITMD - INSIDE THE METAL DETECTOR of George and Carl.
third, then you may be grow up to level of guru and will answer on provocative 'What compares to current Retail detectors'.
now... no direct answer on your request be cause the answer is only what you do yourself.

The only change I would make to kt315's reply, is to suggest building the Minipulse Plus rather than Baracuda or Surf-PI. The documentation is of a much higher quality, and it has a 2-stage preamp (as suggested by bernte_one).
The details for the latest version (REV-D) can be found here -> Minipulse Plus
and kits are available from www.silverdog.co.uk
