What detector to build ?

What is the best detector to build for gold prospecting for beginner to intermediate level. Something that would find small gold ( 1 - 2 grain nuggets ) to larger gold nuggets.
If there is not one what detector should be considered for this purpose.

MPP or MiniPulse Plus is the best/only currently available kit that has the requisite 2 stage preamp that will allow small gold detection when used with a very fast coil. That said, detection of 1-2 grain flakes of gold is very difficult at any significant depth. If I were trying to detect small flakes like that I'd build a 5" round spider coil as detailed in the Chance PI Coil thread of the Coils forum. Be prepared to dig a lot of small junk at the sensitivity necessary for these small/fast targets!

Thanks for the replies guys. I will look into these. I have a friend with a gold claim in Northern California he goes out and detects for gold in the summer and I might get to go with him this year if I can work it out at out store. I just thought it would be fun to build a detector and take it with me and find some gold with something I built.
