  • Liquid Plastic

    Hi Guys,
    Is liquid plastic (Polyurethane Resin) any good for filling a coil housing? Epoxy is so expensive.

    it can be, but you will need slow cure low temperature hardener, standard poly resin can melt the shell.

      Try Walmart. For $3 you can buy a can of "Great Stuff". I believe it to be a polyurathane type expanding foam. Dries fast, gets very hard, is waterproof, non-conductive, and extremely light. Just have to figure out how much to use as it expands pretty good.

        We dont have a walmart in the UK. Our epoxy is quite expensive. Hi Sinclairuser; I have found some slow cure epoxy, it is clear but Im not too bothered about that. Have a look;

          that looks ok, it depends how hot it gets as it cures, if you are unsure give them a ring.

            If your making a PI coil, any PU resin should be ok
            I got mine form here http://www.maragon.co.uk/arts-and-crafts.html#Print1
            I used the casting resin, mixed with about 40% fillite powder to lighten it - certainly didn't melt or warp my coil shells (from Don)
            I even used some colour paste although if using a scuff cover thats not needed

              Thanks Silverdog I will check it out.

              Sinclair user; It takes between 1 and 3 days to cure.

                yes the poly resin i used took about that long, which was ok since it was an ib pi coil and allowed me to tweak the balance as it set.
                i mentioned the heat issue since from experience i have found fast cure resins can get quite hot when curing.
                i have recently made a small ib dd coil, and used wonder gel(mentioned in another thread) it seems ok.

                  Fiberglass resin and a bit less hardener than recommended for slower curing it is chip to buy
