  • White's Spectrum XLT Screen

A friend of mine brought his White's Sprectrum XLT by today to show it to me. He said he had left the batteries in it and it had not been used in a while. He cleaned up where the old batteries had corroded, installed new batteries but when you turn it on the screen has lines in it that where not lighting up. Could that be from the corrosion or is the screen going out. Has anyone ever had this problem before.

Apparently common. Send to Whites for an LCD replacement. Cost me ~$125 if I remenber right - plus they replaced stuff and calibrated it. Otherwise, there are replacement displays on ebay etc that could work but some don't have the backlight.

Send to Whites for an LCD replacement. --- golden words! russian answered 'try to do some and some', american one said 'send the trash in the company'. =)))
open both housings, upclick the flat cable, draw it out and check every wire in it by tester on 'Ohms'.

kt315, Your translations are a bit off but I think I get what you are saying.
The lines in the display are usually not due to poor wire connections. They are due to poor connections on the LCD glass substrate.
I am speaking from experience with my XLT and LCD's in general (even LCD TV's).
Let's say you are in Russia and want to fix it. I think the issue is with the conductive rubber gasket. If I remember right it has conductive stripes throughout that connect the upper glass surface with lower control signal layout signals. Maybe you can pull off the glass and find another working LCD with the same stripe spacing and use its conductive rubber strip? Go for it. I actually tried taking mine apart and cleaning surfaces with alcohol. It changed, maybe a bit better, but still frustrating to use. When I sent my XLT to Whites, they replaced the LCD with a new better one, replaced a shaft, replaced the coil, and tuned up the board. Awesome detector - well worth spending the money on. I didn't even try the display I had purchased from Ebay.
