Daqarta $99
Uses sound card
http://www.daqarta.com/index.htm
Daqarta would be most useful for non-pi designs but LabVIEW could be used for both. A parallel or serial port can be used to trigger ext logic and interface with a high speed a/d being controlled with a pic24 or dspic to collect a burst of data to be processed by LabVIEW. Daqarta and its macro programming language appears easier to learn and use but is much more limited. LabVIEW is non-trivial to learn, but with no significant limitations, can be used for so much more.
The main limitation of this version of LabVIEW is not being able to build standalone distributable apps that run without LabVIEW. For research purposes, this is not relevant. Both are windows only
