  • wide distance directional metal detector!

Imagine huge sites or woods and all what is needed to find metal-objects is
turning 360° around and scan the closer area around! Wouldn't it be fantastic?!

Of course all those LRL-dreamers (they are believing their own suggestions
and aren't able to provide the smallest proofs for their adventurous claims)
hunt this way already with very doubtful success but we need something real!

So the question is: What is really working directional and what not?!

It's clear that also usual MDs work somekind directional but not very far.

The range should be at least 10 meters for large objects.

What could work is some P.I. detector with high directional tesla coil or
something that sends out some radar-style pulse and listens if some
eddy-current loss caused by nearby metal-abjects are detectable.

Another way might be some special magnetometer that is able to
recognizes the complete 10 meter radius large magnetical field around
and sees if while walking over the area some closer coming object is
    disturbing this field.
This way at least larger magnetical-metal-objects could be detected.

Another way would be some highly directional planar- or Yagi antenna
    in combination with usual MD-circuit.
The result should be some steady EM-field which is reaching around
10meter distance like a 2 meter coil also would, but of course with
a much smaller and much more powerful special coil.

If a large enough metal-object crosses the long-range-EM-field of the detector
from already 10 meters while scanning 360° of the actual area the detector
is able and sensitive enough to see the difference.
Perhaps also some reflector shield has to be used so the detection
is focused just into one straight ahead direction.

btw. detecting stuff which is 10m away already absolutly is possible!
It depends just on the coils size and where are the coils are located.

The challenge will be creating a hand-holdable and not too heavy detector
which is already with pretty small and lightweight coils sensitive enough
to reach pretty far distant (ca. 5-15 meters) metal-objects.

Perhaps some directional magnetometer is the most simple solution,
because if some metal-object is crossing the line between user and the
earths-magnetical pole or if a metal object somewhere not too far
distracts the field-lines, this should be measurable from a far distance.

If someone knows already about such real working devices please inform us here!

Well, distances of several meter detection for large metal objects has been around for several decades in the form of proximity fuses.
Would the design be usable for search type metal detectors?
That is questionable. My personal opinion? Nope.
And no, I don't have any schematics.

After I checked wikipedia I'm pretty shure those fuzes will not work at all to detect buried metal.
Because usually there is a solid material inbetween and not just air.

But I had some interesting idea how it works - detecting of large metal objects from several meters away:

It has to do with analyzing of the electro-magnetical field tendency:

Compare it with a compass who already starts slightly to move if a metal object is nearby.

What is needed is a 2D or even 3D display output in realtime that shows some
      relevant spectrum of the EM-field.
Per instance longwave around 100kHz and of course in combination with the
      actual earth-magnetical-field situation.

While you walk around the site, field, wood or whatever, you can view directly
how the EM-field changes. You see if the field becomes stronger or weaker and
you can adjust the contrast or the value-resolution.
This is needed to have all the time the best output no matter if the field at some
place is really strong or pretty weak.

Of course this field-analyzer will not show you how strong is the EM-field 20m
ahead, left or right of you. But it shows the EM-field where you are standing
now and how it was everywhere on the track where you was going -
or all the places where you have already been around 50-100 meters.

In combination with some GPS and digital compass it will be possible
to map the whole EM-field-situation of a larger area and to show hotspots
and in exactly which direction the field becames stronger or weaker!

After some expierience someone could read the output-pattern pretty good.

Per instance if it was already shown by a before detection-trip
that the EM-field level raises by 5% per meter if a car stands 20m ahead
someone also can guess the size of other metal objects depending on the
      % raise per meter.

Of course this is not just like a magnetometer that maps the 2 dimensional area of the site
while walking over it but an EM-field detector with GPS (or Glonass), compass and magnetometer support !!!

      The crucial question is:
Which frequency or EM-field-spectrum or combi is the best - at what region - for what kind of metal !?!

      Only tests will show.

To create it, a magnetometer sensor, a sensitive multiband-receiver with amplified non-directional antenna
and a laptop, some smartphone or other portable computer devices is needed.

And for the profi-version some half-visible googles so you can see directly in front of your eyes how the field is changing.
