  • Assistance for spare parts list - Surf PI

    Hi,
I am new to the forum, and have found it a great resource.

I have ordered a Surf PI kit to assemble as a beach detector as I live on Christmas Island.
I have good equipment on the island to assemble and test, but it is impossible to get ANY spare parts without waiting months.
The last thing I want is to kill a component during testing and get stuck waiting.

While I am in Perth (for the next 10 weeks), I would like to compile a list of spares worth buying to take to the island.

My first list was going to be a few of EVERY component - then the next thought was to buy spare boards too.

Also coil winding wire suggestions - currently i'm going to experiment with cat5 first off.

    So the question is;

What electronic components would you take if you were going to be on a deserted island?

    Thanks

    Cliff

I can carry more than I can afford.

Ordered Inside the Metal Detector from Amazon as well... Exchange rate sucks right now, $60 AUD for it.

Well I just sent off my sea freight to the island.

          I ended up overdoing everything.

3 Silverdog kits. (Surf, Minipulse and the Chance board and chip).
Barra board from KT315 (still reading about other Barra kit problems and updates).
2 IDX boards (from ebay, meant to be old stock Silverdog).
Enough components to build all plus spares.

Krot2-XM fully assembled (set up with my ACE250 coil currently)
          Garrett ACE250
          Whites coinmaster 6000D S2
Fisher Quicksilver 10.5 coil for CZ series (got this based on ivconics comments on IDX builds)

          5 different coil housings.
          3 spools enameled winding wire (0.2 0.4 0.6).

Peel and stick blue (Never knew this existed until I read ITMD).

On list is blank boards and etchant and some form of shielding spray (yet to be found).

Once I am back on Christmas Island, it takes months to get anything.

4 Weeks and I am finally back to my electronics gear.....

          Now, what have I missed?

              Yep over done it.

When traveling I normally take two detectors sometimes 3

Depending on the beach you may find the IDX will work quite well if you turn the threshold down and work in discrimination mode.

Over difficult beaches you can use it all metal mode swing slow and keep a constant high of coil above the sand. Any real targets will give a quick rise in tone as changes in ground condition are a slow rise in tone. Works best with a smaller coil.

Pointy spade is pretty essential if rocks are on the beach.

Batteries covered by other uses/hobbies already.

This is not a trip, this is the second part of moving to the island, and I will have spare time in the wet to play electronics again.

Capacitor on the RX need altering but don't know the value. pretty sure the value is not in the IDX thread

Well, I have settled into the tropical island life and started my projects.

Next stage, coil design and assembly.
