  • Which board and why?

Hey guys i have been building a barracuda pi because it was the board that (was within my own abilities) seemed best suited to the beach which is only 5mins away for me, i was just wondering about each board that is available and what are the uses/advantages/disadvantages for each? eg barracuda vs mini pulse vs surf pi vs chance ect.... land vs beach vs specific target vs best all rounder vs features ect....?

also sorry if this is in the wrong place but i could not find a 'general' for the projects section.

include also Delta Pulse, Hammerhead PI

Delta Pulse - uses/advantages/disadvantages - nice to hunt with big coil, real deeper, power tuning to 450-500us pulse width max, ground cancel, true non-motion static mode, Geiger VCO sound.

Hammerhead - uses/advantages/disadvantages - best learning platform, any options on your choice, perfect detailed article/ manual. any dummy must begin from HH then all troubles with PI's in future will be looking nothing.

Any of the PI projects would be good for the beach.
Minipulse Plus has the best documentation, and (as a consequence) has the highest success rate as regards ending up with a working detector. It is the only one with a two-stage preamp, which allows it to sample earlier than the other PI projects. This capability is useful for those wanting to search for small targets like thin gold chains or gold nuggets.
Both Surf-PI and Baracuda are simple PI projects to build, but several people have had problems getting either of these working due to inexperience.
Hammerhead is the most complex project, but is also the most flexible as regards configurable options. It's not a beginners's project.
Delta Pulse is also popular, and was designed for finding large buried targets using 1m x 1m (or larger) frames.
The Chance PI is not recommended as a first project. It incorporates a micro-controller that attempts to discriminate against iron.

Which project you choose depends a lot on your level of knowledge, and the test equipment that you have access to.

What cable have you used to connect the coil to the control box? Some screened cables can act like a microphone, especially when you tap it. These cables are usually the type where the screen is twisted around the centre core, instead of being braided.
You can also experience this problem is you've (by mistake) connected the centre core to 0V, and the screen to the hot line.

i have used (only as a tempory fix) a 2 core speaker wire about 0.75mm sq and i have taped it down (to a length of wood) so that it does not move around.

I suspect that's the cause of the problem. Try replacing the speaker wire with a braided shield.
TV antenna cable will be ok for a first test.

We had an EM device at work that showed a thunderstorm which came by. It seems there is a bit of
voltage developed in the wind. Shielding should help ignore this.
