  • cutlass II umax overload.

Last night right at the end of the hunt I was detecting near some metal picnic tables and the detector overloaded. I tried pulling the batteries, remove the coil nothing I could think of would rectify the problem so I headed home and about an hour later tried it again and everything was fine. I pulled the cover and checked wiring and resoldered all not perfect connections (5 almost broken connections) and while I was in there I replaced the 2x4.7uF caps with the 2x10 uF's that is a common mod that Sven does to his cutlasses and silvers. Looking forward to air testing the upgrade and compare the results.

While I had the detector open I took piles of pictures of the connections and the board so I have a good record of the connection if further wiring troubles occur

Anyhow my question is what can be done to "reset" the detector. This is the first time I have had this problem and I thought for a while that the detector was blown. scared the poop out of me at least for a little while.

darn it happened again tonight just after looking around the tot lot (all made of steel so tons of signals) the detector started screaming and then became unstable and did not work at all. shut it down waited.....started it up still unstable. did this a few more time and finally went home. by the time I got home the detector was fine again..... any ideas folks??????

just a thought could it be the battery????????

edit: just checked the Duracell battery and it was marginal right on the line between green and yellow on the tester.

hopefully that will solve the problem. I am still learning the detector so I am not too familiar with it's quirks yet.

Detector has no memory so switching off and back on is enough to reset it.

Loud sound like near iron does draw more current so could be battery. A low battery will cause it to go flaky when near a target. My detector on low battery will starts to give long tone or broken crackly tone when swinging over a target in disc mode. All metal mode will work for a little longer.

As far as I know the Cutlass has a built in battery check. Worth testing after it happens as batteries have a habit of bouncing back a bit by the time you get home.
