  • What md should I build next?

    Hello everyone
now I have finished my surf pi for beaches.
I'm wanting to build a md for the fields with discrimination & maybe with vdi
something that works well on uk soil and is not too hard to build
I was thinking of maybe the raptor from itmd book or maybe silver dogs tgsl
Maybe I would like to try building my own pcb
    So any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Regards dean

    Hi,
You can make the KROT2 project. It's simple to build (exept the SMD ATXMEGA32 that needs good skils).
This project is more simple to tune than TGSL cause the software adapt himself to the coil you make. So, you don't have to respect a phase relation for nulling.
Moreover, i love the HMI (LCD with 4 buttons) and it has many soft trick (polyphonic sound, VDI, etc..).

Repto, i already search this krot2 and get many info, but have different information, do you have a complete detail project and file to use.

Hi really good just watch it on YouTube I really like it.
is it in kit or do I have to source parts my self?
          regards

            Hi,
I cannot get such a good sensitivity than the video but 8 or 10 " for 1€ coil in sand is enough for me.
I started with the smd version, etched by myself and there was something wrong with my pcb.
Then, someone gave me a through hole version of the board and everything is alright now.
I have many usbasp programmer at home but you cannot programm ATXMEGA with this, exept if you modify the internal soft of the programmer.
Lickily for me, i have ATMEL ICE programmer. I use it with atmel studio.
If you look at the whole thread, you can send an inquiry for a pcb with the ATXMEGA already programmed for 30€.
I'll check at my files later...

Both the TGSL and IDX are well developed and if built carefully should work straight out of the box and work correctly.

I have built a Bandido (almost the same as the TGSL) and IDX Pro

                Both air test okay

Both loose lots of depth to small targets especially on there edge if too much discrimination is used.

Both struggle if there is a lot coke on the ground.

IDX had the edge on quite fields. Bandido on most.

Bandido with a small coil is as good as any machine on the market if the field is full of forged nails

However I have a 1982 fisher 1260-X only used it a few times but I am regularly digging targets over 10" deep on noisy fields. My home built ones are good for the top 8" and anything deeper is an exception.

Been looking for a winter project.

These are the ones I have been looking at.
1266-X (love to make one but not as well developed)
Eldorado (no kit or PCB but very popular on md4u.ru)
Quasar ARM (PCB and kits available on eBay)

                Still not decided.

                  Hi Arief,
I get all files on the thread and informations on the author's page.
I don't have the DIP version PCB but i have two differents SMD versions.
You should find the DIP in the KROT2 thread somewhere.

I build two tgsl, v3 and ivconic version, the best working is v3 but only get 25cm for brass coin for air test, on the ground with disc on, it get only 8cm, I must have some mistake somewhere.

Ya, i found dip ver by mr.fred post, the chip is not too expensive, but need to figure out how to upload a sop ic first

                      IDX can be VDI.
Maybe something older with vu meter? Arado 120B? Magnum? or design a board for Cscope 1220B? or one of Saschos?
                      Soooo many choices here! .
Maybe find one with equal RX/TX for easy windings?

                        Hi Tim
thank you i think I'm going to do a krot from Russia but I want to know if it's any good on uk soil.
I was thinking of the idx or tgsl but I was told the krot is easier and it only my second md build
its the coils are scary to me I struggled with basket coil on surf pi
                        thank you
                        regards Dean

In that case I would recommend you build either the TGSL or Raptor. Both are well documented, but since this will be your first VLF detector, Raptor has the most in-depth description of how it works. Also, both TGSL and Raptor can use standard commercial 5-pin Tesoro coils, which are readily available second-hand at a reasonable cost. After that you could have a go at making your own coils. At least you'll know the detector actually works, and not have to wonder where the problem lies.

                            Hello qiaozhi
                            thank you for your advice
I have built a few projects before transistor tester, oscilloscope ,ecig mod boxes.signal generator. mostly kits
whats the proformace like on the tgsl?
and can I use vdi later as a mod
can I use vdi on raptor?
what frequency does the tgsl run?
i do have a friend who is very helpful he's a television engineer who can repair just about anything electronic
but he's never built a md but he's interested in building one too
how much does the krot (mole2 ) cost£?
if I can buy it preprogrammed I think between me and my friend we should be ok with that.
                            thank you qiaozhi
                            regards

It's basically a Tesoro Golden Sabre.

                              Yes - to both questions.
