Building something and working with something are two pairs of shoes:

What in the end counts is that the motivation will remains high so the whole effort really was
    or will be lucrative.

And I don't see the extreme, huge, massive, ultra-complicated etc. hurdles between PI and IB.
There are enough "simple" IB designs out there to built which are even more easy to create
than some of those new PI (pulse induction, not private investigator LOL) projects.

Now please don't tell me that the motivation for searching will be and remain fantastic
while walking around with some homebrewed PI which has no discrimination, is pretty slow
    and all the other disadvantages.

Building PIs is merely some solution for a situation in need when all what counts is to
get some metal-detector at all without much effort etc.
Like building or buying some old black/white TV because its also better than no TV at all.

If this forum wants to be modern and up-to-date it better starts to look out
for some simple but its job good making IB-schematics so those who wanna work
motivated with a selfbuilt detector who fits their needs really can enjoy what they
are building and not will stop detecting after a few days because they are tired of
digging out every rusty nail etc.

Depth is not THE main-advantage of PIs because usually there exists no extreme
ground conditions. And when PI-enthusiasts are claiming that those are so much
easier to built than IB-detectors then it is pretty simple to prove them wrong:

I saw some IB-designs at the internet which just need around 10 electronic parts.
So it really should be possible to create some fine IB-detector with good depth and
discrimination with 30 to 50 components mounted on some 5x5cm PCB.
    Its name could be: "Geotech-IB".

If not we might take some lessons from China which builts them for many years! LOL

    Anyway:
Don't waste your time and money for stuff which in the end is pretty
worthless concerning your needs, wishes and longer-lasting motivations!
Don't built yourself some Black-White-TV if you know already now that
you would enjoy much more some color-TV!
But if this is your only chance for getting a TV - please go ahead.

Many people on this earth would be happy to have some MD at all,
no matter what kind of technical system it is using.
Per instance Egypt where only some simple PI-circuits are free available.
Greetings to Hammerhead and I hope he has meanwhile a useful detector!

As far as VLF's go I have one very good one, and on a nearby beach which is heavy with black sands, I can barely detect a quarter at 3 inches, when normally my VLF will detect a quarter to 10-12 inches depth, places like this a PI detector rules. Much more depth. I do agree that with perhaps a better form of ground balancing a VLF detector could be a depth monster too. But that hasn't been built yet. Maybe soon?

for me its a why buy a 72 inch 4k curved tv when i watch every thing on my pc at 1080p sure it nice to say i have it but other wise its a wast of money. now if i was a console gamer it would be a different story. like wise while the functions of discrimnation and depth dont mean much to me most people it would be good for so in that respect your right there should be more of those projects started for those it makes sense for. so instead of saying dont do pi how about get people to sart doing that vlf maybe get every one to start putting down design goals so we can work toward... say a light weight vlf that can detect a coin at 12 inch on a black sand beach and has semi automatic ground ballance

me im just interested in building a machine that is cable free (so dosent snag on branches) light weight (1000m meter vertical diffrence in my detecting area) and is absale freindlyfor doing cliff faces and slips

The mainstream ruined the IB-technology with its motion-only-circuits out of:
"We want everything super easy going!".
When it comes to black sand, volcanic ground, loam and other mineralized soils.

But if you search with an IB-non-motion detector like the DeepHunter and others,
even a 30cm layer of brick-stones is no problem if there's a bigger object below.

And PI also is no wonder-medicine against such high mineralization!
It loads up the whole ground and waits for some "metallic feedback"
while the IB looks about positive or negative changes of the field -
that way also cavity is detectable if the soil is somehow mineralized.
But of couse without an everything blurring IB-motion-circuit.

Those motion-circuits with their auto-groundbalance work fine on
low to medium mineralized soils but of course not good with black sand.
And just a few of them can detect special mineralized stones incl. meteorites.

The key to success with high mineralized ground is to keep all the time
as good as possible the same distance coil-to-floor.
And sometimes only removing the disturbing soil really helps to find
out if there is a find or not - especially when using motion-detectors.

It's a question of personal needs, interests, fascination, attraction, motivation etc. if something is worth the money, features, effort etc. or not.

Per instance I really enjoyed the WOW-effect and excitement for a very long time after changing from a smaller to a larger screen!
It's simply a difference to see a 3D movie at the cinema or at home on the TV. Many people wanna have all the time the new and better
electronic products or cars etc. so they can feel this exciting and pleasureful WOW-effect again - and again - and again.
Because after some time the human mind gets used to even the most amazing experiences so the search for the next kick starts.

I'm also doing alot "vertically search" - whats important is that the detector and coil is very lightweight -
you can wind the cable tight around the stem - the cable is not the main problem but: not falling down!

            > detect a coin at 12 inch on a black sand beach and has semi automatic ground ballance

Absolutely - yeah - switchable motion / non-motion in one plus discrimination and simple to adjust ground-balance!

Hi all. Bit of a hiatus. Went bush for work, out of internet range. 6 weeks in I went down for the count- diagnosis inoperable pancreatic cancer, spread to liver, lungs and lymph already.
              ....So I'm back!
My advice here-there is a detector for every type of hunting and ground condition, you need a variety. My favourite at the moment is my IDX with Mr Bill mods. Even though it only has the 6x4 shooter, it outshines the BH Tracker IV w/10 inch on depth, penetration, and identification.
The Groundhog is a timeless beast, the XR71 a monster, and the GMT the ducks guts for smalls and blacksand ID.
Like I say- a machine for each application is best.

Looking forward to finally trying a few of Saschos designs now.

Damned, the next one here with massive health problems! What's going on in this world full of **** ?!
Anyway, good luck when possible, enjoy life as long as you can and forget about all this crap while drinking a good whisky!
Perhaps you can stop "feeding" the cancer with unhealthy stuff but a life without any good reason directly is worthless!
Just keep cool because the doctors also don't know everything! And stay away from the dirty pharma-lobby and their vassals!

Personally I like deep-searches incl. deep-diggings and also to search for iron-stuff
so I even like PI-detectors if they would have other important features, too.

But the tragic thing is that most PIs are so poor if it comes to that point!

And people who built them just out of simplicity really hinder themselves having a
fantastic versatile detector which is usable for many different search-situations!

Of course we would have it already here, the needed stuff:

                http://www.geotech1.com/pages/metdet...eti549_150.pdf

Easy to built and very sensitive induction balance detector!
It would need some 2017 update plus discrimination but
with all the gurus here this would be the smallest prob.

For luck most of the treasure-hunters incl. you are not comparable with all
these kiddies who need each year the next newest smartphone!!!

But with too limited features metal-detecting just is no longer motivating
and that's why PI is great for special tasks or gold-fields but nothing else.

Yes agreed FF. 549 is as good as any to try, and the pharmacos are ALL CROOKS! The true research establishments make the worthwhile discoveries on taxpayer monies, then these corporate criminals milk it for all it's worth.

The over bodies going Pharma-firms brought already 100 years ago medicine called Cocaine and Heroine on the market! LOL
Germany was leading with that. In 2nd worldwar they provided speed (crystal) etc. to the soldiers called "tank-chokolade"!

And when people do get cancer? When they are living with very unhealthy situations without knowing it!
Massive radioactive pollution, air full of smog, food with chemicals, plastic bottles, meat full of metal etc.

But as long as nothing inside the body hurts, cancer is no object of interest anyway!
So the most simple cure is to find out, directly when something starts to hurt, what is the reason and avoiding it!
Because most of the time cancer is just some result of "too much" of something unhealthy like sun, xrays or smoke.

Anyway, people who are living very healthy also can get killed by a car-accident etc!

But I know it's not that easy - it's like telling someone in a wheelchair that life still can be pleasureful!
And I did this already - it was a friend of mine and he was happy that somebody cares about his life!

However - it's important that people know that too much of unhealthy stuff can cause cancer.
But the problem with this is that everyone has a different phyisical and mental constitution.

And now, Tim, take a pleasureful gold-digging trip to the wilderness of Alaska until you're fit as a sports-shoe again!

LOL - Only a few wanna get drunk in the morning! This is just warming up the brain a bit for the day
or for "repairing the hangover", but the real party time starts when also the other people are ready for it.
In Europe meanwhile the youth warms up until 1am in the morning and then gets really drunk at the club!

Alcohol is not that unhealthy because the human body produces it itself too.
And its absolutely more healthy to drink 2 liters of beer than 2 liters of cola!

And concerning hunger its more healthy to avoid poisoned food and drink "natural" brews etc. instead!
Per instance herbs-liqueur longdrinks including honey and peppermint-tea should be pretty healthy!

More probably a small country with a rebel population (apologies to any small, but proud, country wrongfully taken over by Putin).

Seriously, who wants to dig that far for a coke can or buried military waste though?
