  • Monster 21 Inch Coil Shell

Though you might enjoy some pics of my home built 21 inch double-d coil shell and home built big mother of a 24 inch vacuum forming table.

After MANY failures I finally got the whole system working well and this was the result!

Check out the sharp corners, the dual pumps and reserve tanks draw it down to 25 inches in 3 seconds flat and near 30 inches not soon after that.

Heres a picture of the beast.

    2 questions...

Once you get it formed, how do you trim it out?

How are you attaching the rod?

After its poured I trim away the bulk with a razor knife then I trim to the final finish using a router mounted to a router table.

The shell you see hear is one of two types I formed, the lower rod connection on this shell is cast and attached separately, on the other shell not shown the lower rod connection (for a Minelab Explorer) is molded into the shell. Each method has its pro's and cons. I have two different samples of cement being shipped to me for testing, they are supposed to be able to bond the urethane casting resin used for the lower rod connection to the ABS shell. If they bond well I'll probably go with the two part design.
