Just musing. Wonder what would happen if you took a 3D printer, got a larger nozzle, and fed a wire through it along with the filament. You'd probably have to run it hotter to compensate for the heat of the copper wire, and it would take longer to set, but this just might be a way to automatically create special coils and have them fused into a plastic casing at the same time.
Sure, most of the 3D printers have a small footprint, but if it works, it should not be to difficult to make one that can print a large coil.
    Just a thought.

Printing a Trouft like form is another idea. Lay the wire in and seal it ?

Sounds doable..... One way to do it is to perhaps take inspiration from the Mark One/Two... https://youtu.be/jZCWZVM908A
One nozzle to lay a substrate, and another separately driven one to feed and lay wire. Nice to see this being discussed. (Patent trolls keep out !)
9 or so years ago, I remember following the attempts of the reprap pioneers in their struggles just to get a nozzle-extruder to function reliably. And now, just look. All sorts material available ready to buy on spools, any variety of hardware and electronics. Tons of online info and guides to get up and started.
